Not to mention the tight community of adults that are as happy to get beat by a nice move as they are to get the kill. I'd much rather be the guy who says "this is awesome lets build it up and get people on board," than the guy that says this is awesome, but don't bother.įrankly, I'll take the 70 hours of gameplay I've gotten from an Early Access title with plenty more to come than the (at best) 10-20 hours I'd get from a finished single player campaign.

It's impressed me in a way that few VR games have, the devs are active and genuine, and people need to know that there IS a community that plays every day and is invested in the long term future of the game. When everyone says multiplayer VR games will fail because people don't play them, people don't buy them! I think that's why I've been such an active cheerleader for this game. One of the main questions you see with the game is "are people playing? Will people be playing in the future? It looks great but I won't buy it if people aren't playing." Reviews tell people "hey this is awesome, but no ones playing so don't buy." And it's totally reasonable to not want to blow money on a game that you won't be able to enjoy, but its doing a really good job at ensuring that these games won't do well. A ton of us grew up on MechWarrior.īut then, this whole thing is self defeating. It can be done, and frankly with VR's mostly adult community with a lot of space, flight, and driving sim fans, it wouldn't be surprising to see a mech game do it. I can at least point to Pavlov and Echo Arena as successful multiplayer experiences in VR with active communities (and this game is way more impressive than Pavlov). But traditional single player Early Access games also struggle. It IS a tricky place because you're right, multiplayer VR games have struggled. You don't have a community play testing your game every day (like Vox does). To Vox's credit there is AI and they're improving on it, but I wouldn't say it's up to snuff for a modern campaign. You might have a programmer and some artists, but do you have access to quality voice acting (or the initial funds to buy some)? Do you have a writer that can do compelling dialogue? How about an AI guy, because that's an incredibly complex bit of programming to make convincing AI and the ones that do it are pretty specialized. However, there are aspects of a campaign that can make things challenging for a small team. Considering they had put out an Oculus demo like 4 years ago, it's safe to say they've put years into it and they weren't thinking of it as taking the easy way out. Well I think you can say it's by no means "simple" to make a game either way.

It's by far the most immersive VR game I've played and the only one that has lasted me more than 5-10 hours. It's super physics based with lots of emphasis on using your jump jets, ramming, out maneuvering, etc. You're not going to have children screaming into the mic at you for not getting a kill. Most of us grew up on the MechWarrior games. They HAVE recently been able to move into a studio space and start expanding the team because of the Early Access sales, which at least means more content coming out sooner.Īnd I know I can't convince someone to like something they simply don't like, but if you did decide to join us on multiplayer, it's a mature, welcoming community that is much more interested in helping new players and getting more folk into the game than getting kill counts. I think it's something they'd jump on immediately given enough success and feeling that the current iteration is up to snuff. But as it is right now, it would take at least another couple years in development to build up a solid campaign and they've been at this one for years already. They ARE actively working on having co-op missions in before the thing releases from Early Access, with things like protect the convoy and such. The devs have heard everyone asking for single player and have said from the get go that they'd love to be able to do one and do it right, but they felt that with three guys, they had to focus on one and that multiplayer would be their best bet. I've got over 70 hours on it and just love it to death. So I can say that I've put a ton of time into this game.
